Review Status of SEA in the Greater Mekong Subregion
About: The SEA review project was commissioned by GMS Environment Operations Center. ICEM was requested to review the Status of Strategic Environmental Assessment in the Greater Mekong Sub-region as a benchmark and guide to the use of SEA in the GMS countries.
The project involved the preparation of a review report as part of the preparatory phase of the GMS Core Environment Program (CEP) Component 1 – which sought to integrate environmental and social concerns into the development of economic corridors and sectors in the region.
The report was based on presentations and discussion by members of the GMS Working Group on Environment and their international partners at a special planning session on the CEP Component 1 in August 2006. This took the form of a briefing paper to the GMS WGE to be regularly updated as SEA systems and capacities in the region evolve. The report provided a guide to identifying program priorities and potential linkages with existing SEA projects and initiatives in GMS countries.
The report reviewed current status of SEA in Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam and International SEA Initiatives in the GMS.
