ICEM – the International Centre for Environment Management was established in 1999 to help governments and communities build capacity in the sustainable use of natural resources and maintenance of environmental quality. ICEM works in Asia, especially the Mekong countries, focusing on climate change, water resources, biodiversity conservation and integrated assessments. ICEM seeks to integrate environmental concerns with development through spatial planning, socio-economic analysis and environmental assessment tools. The centre draws from an active network of experts and organizations, nationally and internationally, and in public and private sectors, in forging partnerships to address critical conservation and development issues.

PhD Positions

The University of Tasmania is seeking candidates for two PhD positions focused on protected areas and community-led conservation in Cambodia. These research projects are part of the Protected Areas and Development (PAD) Program III, which ICEM is implementing in collaboration with IUCN, the University of Tasmania, and Landcare Australia, with funding from the Australian Government through the Mekong-Australia Partnership.

Assessing the role of Cambodia’s seasonal wetlands for conservation and development – This research will investigate the ecological and socio-cultural significance of Cambodia’s seasonal wetlands—small, rain-fed seasonal pools that are vital yet often overlooked. The project will explore where these wetlands occur, how long they persist, and their importance for biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and local community livelihoods. Research will combine spatial, ecological, and socio-economic approaches. Click here to learn more.

Unlocking the power of community-based management in Cambodia – This project will examine Cambodia’s unique community-protected area network, where communities exercise rights to manage, protect, and benefit from local forests and fisheries. Located in the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, the research will evaluate whether these areas are delivering meaningful conservation outcomes and socio-cultural benefits, using both quantitative and qualitative impact evaluation approaches. Both positions include opportunities for field research in Cambodia and collaboration with local communities, government partners, and regional institutions.
