Project Description
ICEM led the Thailand component of a multi-country UNDP/GEF initiative aimed at achieving financial sustainability for national protected area (PA) systems. This integrated project linked site-level interventions with national-level policy reforms. While BirdLife International managed the Vietnam component, ICEM’s role focused on designing and implementing consultation and capacity-building activities in Thailand. The project emphasized aligning conservation objectives with financial planning, identifying cost-effective management practices, estimating true costs of revised PA management, and generating sustainable funding streams.
Objectives, Activities and Results
The project’s goal was to lay the groundwork for financially sustainable PA systems in up to six countries. ICEM’s activities in Thailand included managing the national component of the global project, coordinating a comprehensive communications and stakeholder consultation strategy, and organizing national workshops with key government and private sector partners. The team also conducted field visits with PA staff, facilitated the national technical advisory group, and authored the national program document. These efforts contributed to improved PA financial planning and policy frameworks, enhancing the long-term viability of Thailand’s conservation efforts.
