Project Description
This project focused on assessing the impacts of climate change on wetlands in the Mekong River Basin and aimed to provide scientifically grounded adaptation recommendations. The initiative sought to develop a robust evidence base and apply rapid geo-spatial assessment methodologies to evaluate the vulnerability of wetland ecosystems. By enabling the transfer of site-specific findings to sub-basin and basin-wide planning levels, the project intended to enhance the integration of climate considerations into natural resource and development planning.
Objectives, Activities and Results
The project’s primary objective was to strengthen the capacity of scientists and planners to “up-scale” wetland adaptation responses to similar wetland types across the region. Activities included defining wetlands based on international best practices, incorporating hydrometeorological data to assess climate impacts, and analyzing the implications for communities reliant on wetland ecosystems. The project also built on earlier pilot activities conducted with Mekong River Commission (MRC) member countries, offering hands-on training for government staff in climate vulnerability assessment methods. Key outcomes included enhanced capacity within national agencies, improved methodologies for wetland climate impact assessments, and actionable adaptation options to guide regional planning and safeguard wetland-dependent livelihoods.
