Study on Water Pollution Control and Drainage & Wastewater Improvement in Hanoi City

Hanoi City is facing increasing water related challenges. These include a high level of pollution in its rivers, lakes, and groundwater; a reduction in water flowing through the Red River; increased groundwater depletion leading to high level of subsidence; and increased levels of drainage congestion. The challenges are interrelated and lead to amplification of risks to socio-economic growth patterns of the city. There is a need for a coordinated and integrated water management approach to make Hanoi as an environmentally friendly city and an attractive economic hub for the future.
Aim: Develop effective, sustainable water planning and management to address water pollution in key rivers, and develop an investment program for improving drainage and wastewater management in prioritized locations.
The project focuses on two key areas:
Assignment I: Technical Assistance on water pollution management: Development of an effective, sustainable water planning and management to address pollution of water resources on four main rivers: To Lich, Nhue, Day and Tich/Bui
Assignment II: Technical Assistance to improve drainage and wastewater management: Development of an investment program for improving drainage and wastewater management in Long Bien and Gia Lam districts or other prioritized locations – areas with high rates of urbanization, inadequate drainage capacity, unavailability of wastewater management services, and water pollution
- Conducting a baseline review of water pollution in the four rivers, and drainage issues and wastewater management in Long Bien and Gia Lam districts
- Rapid assessment of economic, social and environmental benefits and impact of proposed interventions and analysis of institutional and policy environment in water resources management in Hanoi City
- Modelling of proposed interventions for water pollution, wastewater management and drainage management
- Proposing an investment plan and analysis of technical options for prioritized investments
