Project Description
Between July 10–21, 2023, ICEM, in collaboration with the Hanoi University of Civil Engineering – Faculty of Architecture and Planning (HUCE-FAP), organized a student design competition with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This competition challenged students to reimagine the C.4 site on HUCE’s campus using green, sustainable, and climate-sensitive solutions. The innovative designs are now available to explore in our newly released report.
The C.4 site presented several notable challenges for the student teams, including:
- Rainfall flooding
- High temperatures and urban heat island effect
- Limited access for construction vehicles
- Aging infrastructure
Throughout the competition, students engaged closely with ICEM and HUCE experts in workshops, gaining practical insights into nature-based solutions, water-sensitive urban design, and sustainable practices. Their final designs addressed these challenges by incorporating:
- Low-carbon, nature-based materials
- Efficient freshwater management
- Reduced energy consumption
- Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) and enhanced thermal comfort
- Inclusive and accessible design
A jury of experts from HUCE, ADB, Monash University, and ICEM reviewed the designs, with awards granted for the Most Environmentally Friendly Design, Most Technologically Advanced Design, and Overall Best Design.
