This report considers whether alternative renewable power generation technologies can replace planned
hydropower in the Mekong region? It suggests that at the moment, renewables are unlikely to be able to fulfill the same role as hydropower in the regional ESI and that there are likely to be important synergies between hydropower and renewables. The report examines regionally appropriate renewables technologies in greater detail within Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam through case studies as each country possesses different renewable resource potentials and presents different contexts for the development of renewables technologies.

The report also provides suggestions for further study on renewables deployment in the region.
