Project Description

In September 2015, following up on the Protected Areas and Development (PAD) in the Lower Mekong Case Studies, published in the early 2000S, ICEM, in partnership with local entities and the IUCN, realised the PAD II Case Studies.

Focusing on the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), the 14 reports examine the nexus of biodiversity conservation, development, and climate change. A national government-led review of biodiversity conservation and its significance for development and community welfare, the PAD2 establishes the development benefits of the GMS protected areas estate and its critical role in poverty reduction.

The case studies assess the status and trends in biodiversity, define the impacts of climate change, and address appropriate management and adaptation responses for effective conservation. It aims to encourage regional and national governments to adopt strategies for better integrating protected areas into development planning.

The studies were realised and completed in 2015, thanks to a GMS-wide partnership between government agencies, conservation NGOs, and regional organisations that provided the operational foundation for the project.
